The recent launch of Rihanna's new make up range, 'Fenty Beauty', has had women of all origins uniting in one swell hype over the brands direction and quality.
I won't lie to you, I'm always a little skeptical over new makeup launches, as hired reps and reviewers post nothing not positive reviews which you can't be 100% sure are legit or not sometimes (I've fallen foul to a few misdirected hypes in cosmetics to be 100% sold on things straight away), however I don't know exactly what made me throw myself in to Fenty Beauty, really. I think it was because literally every skin type, tone, and condition were saying the same thing. It wasn't just a capsule group of people.
Another fantastic thing is that the brand launched their flagship products globally on the same day! And even we in GB managed to get an official stockist of the goods to scurry toward at the same time as the other time zones too (not literally at the same TIME though), so I took a deep breathe and ordered myself a foundation, the foundation bush and sponge, as well as one of the highlighter duos to begin with.
The major hook of the Fenty Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation was the shaded selection. The collection caters for FORTY skin tones, which it by far the generous launch of this niche by far. I was ordering online, which is always risky, however I somehow managed to nail it and find the perfect shade for me - 180.
After a good shake, the foundation itself is dispensed pretty "thin". It's almost watery, which spun me into a temporary panic at first. Using the foundation brush, however, soothed my panic in a few short moments as the formula melted into my skin, and almost...disappeared! You sort of feel like saying "hey! where did it go? This is kind of rubbish, it's not masking me up" - BUT DO YOU WANT THAT? Somehow the Fenty foundation manages to have an "absorbing" nature to it, whilst smoothing your skins pigment and appearance without leaving a layer of colour literally ON your skin.
Now the nature of this is utterly wonderful, however don't expect any large spots to cover as well as your smooth skin. You will still need concealer to help chill down any heavy pigmentation from dark scarring or acne.
Verdict? Yeah, I'm sold, and it's 100% switched with my Doublewear for the time being. I love how the foundation evens out the skin, and dries to a powder finish without flattening you out, which in turn really does minimize your need for a finishing product. I did a test run of the foundation on my Instagram Stories feed, and managed a full 10 hours wear of my full face of makeup without a single touch up. Sure, I was a little on the glossy side, but not to any kind of degree that I'd need to break out the blotting sheets in a panic. It looked perfectly fine! Very, very impressed.
As brave as I wanted to be, I just didn't know how to do the "Trophy Wife" justice at this point, so opted for one of the more day wear options in the highlighter offerings, and picked up 'Lightning Dust' and 'Fire Crystal'. This duo is a cool tone highlight compact with an almost foil like finish. When swatched, the formula is silky, whilst still being a powder, and once again does the same as the foundation and somehow ends up melting into the skin on contact.
Verdict? These guys aren't the most intense shades on offer for my skin tone (Fenty shade 180, remember), but that's perfect for me because as I say, I'm not the bravest with the "strobe", and this duo gives me just the right amount of dazzle to feel glorious, without overly reflecting.
So, okay, after the success of round one with the range, I went in for a round two and picked up a set of the 'Match Stix Trio' and 'Gloss Bomb'. Hoping so much that the formula of the "stix" were following suit of the foundation and highlighter, I was pleasantly surprised (and relieved) to know that the whole "melty" vibe was back, but also I had a slight shock as I honestly thought they were just alternative formulas for highlighters! They're not though! They're like little contour kits!
For these, I picked up the set in 'Medium 200', which consists of:
Bamboo – Neutral
Mocha – Cool
Trippin – Gold-Glazed Apricot
Verdict? I swear, these are 'face life' for me. Not only are they the perfectly portable size with the awesome way they stick together with magnetic packaging. 'Bamboo' is the perfect shade under eye and nose concealer for me, which is just a tiny shade lighter than the foundation to add a little definition, whilst 'Mocha' is the most satisfyingly complimentary contour shade with a beautifully blend-able nature. 'Trippin' is cute for the apples of my cheeks, and EVEN MY LIPS, just to add a pop of shimmery peach to an already placed deeper blush, or a freshly moisturised pout.
I've also used 'Mocha' on my eyelids too, to add a really warm tone to the socket.
One MINOR problem I DO have is how the product can't be retracted all the way into its tube packaging. I'm pretty clumsy and although I haven't so far, I am so nervous of catching the product on the lid if I'm in a hurry to pack up.
'Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer' is exactly what it says it is - It's a one for all shade to gloss each and every one of us up with juicy, glass like lips which sheen all day long. FOUR HOURS on after applying this, and the degree of gloss wasn't letting up. It was only really after the fifth that I was beginning to see it fade down.
The thing is, your lips don't lose the formula unevenly. The coverage simply wears away very gradually, uniformly, leaving you with a medium rich bronze, nude pigment to your lips.
Verdict? Broken record time. I loved it. I will, 100% be repurchasing this. My lips are extremely sensitive and constantly dry in nature. This gloss slathers on luxuriously, truly does suit my skin tone perfectly (better worn without concealer payoff on the lips beforehand. Go full natural!), and smells of vanilla-ry watermelon! The big fat applicator is gorgeous to apply with also, and you don't need to "double dip" for full coverage of the lips unless you're going ultra starry!
