I went over to the Marc Jacobs counter with the specific intention of picking up my number 1 mascara of ALL TIME. I can't give it up, and I can't compare it to any other. It's hands down, believe the hype, the BEST mascara in the world. No lie. No exaggeration. More on why it's my favourite in the "Verdict" section at the foot of this post, however I've left a little shot of the applicator head below for you, to get an idea of what you're expecting from that.
The wand is basically like an hourglass structure, with strong bristles evenly spaced throughout to grab hold of each and every lash perfectly.
A full size purchase of this guy comes in at £22, but as I then realised from the festive display prior to paying, that for £24 I could pick up the mascara I was desperately repurchasing, PLUS two travel size eyeliner products to indulge in, all wrapped up in a cute little cracker for an unashamedly "Happy Un-Christmas" gift to me! PREMIUM EYE MAKEUP GIFT IDEAS.
I wear eyeliner every single day when I have a full face of make up on. I've tried to go without it on occasion, but it's just not me. I'm so used to lined eyes that without them, I wonder who I even am.
I won't lie, my favourite eyeliner of all time has been Guerlain's liquid liner, and I have honestly used it, and only it, for the last 5 years. The thing is, I'm an open minded woman when it comes to trying out new cosmetics, so as I say again, for an extra £2 on top of my purchase I couldn't deny myself the opportunity to see if I've been missing out on Marc Jacob's expertise in lining eyes all these years.
Starting out with a "back of the hand" test, I went firstly straight for the liquid eyeliner pen, because liquid liner is my top choice in consistency of liner products.
First impression is how lovely the weight of the pen is. It actually feels like one of the premium fountain pens you can buy that you use for writing, haha. The lid is just like a pen lid! With the name Marc-er, I guess that's what they were going for.
The liner tip is sharp and highly accurate, and the liner itself transfers off on the skin of my hand instantly. You have a great deal of accuracy with this guy...HOWEVER.
I don't know whether it's my type of eyelid or not, but when I attempted to line my top lid, there was a LOT of drag. The pen almost stuttered across my skin, but then I am not at all used to a liquid liner applied with a felt tip applicator (I use a dip brush - thanks Guerlain).
A huge shock though (positive one) is the holding power it has. I literally left the liner to set for all of 5 seconds, and it was not at ALL budging. I needed eye makeup remover to do a decent job of getting it off. 10/10 for staying put [LINK TO BUY].
I left this guy til last, because I'm truly not used to pencil liners, however once again on the back of my hand, the product glided across my skin, and felt absolutely weightless - if that's the right word. It felt like there was nothing there, basically, but I could clearly see it. I can 100% confirm that the formula is very much a gel consistency, and has that almost jelly, slippery, slide to it.
On the eye, this was surprisingly much easier to apply for me than the marc-er, however as a flip side to what I said about the marc-er, this formula comes off much easier.
I think it's more designed for your lower lid than your upper lid. Very impressed with the application though, and I had absolutely no idea that I would be drawn back toward a pencil liner [LINK TO BUY].
Talking mascara, I can't stress again how life changing Marc Jacob's 'Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara' is. Not only does the formula thicken lashes to what looks like double the size, each lash is kept beautifully separated and clump free.
In addition, the mascara is so hard wearing, but at the same time it melts cleanly away with your favourite eye makeup remover.
All of the requirements anyone could ever need from a perfect mascara.
On the liner side, personally, I really will always struggle go break free of the precision and general effortlessness that a brush applicator liquid liner brings, so I can't say that I will be rushing to purchase a full size in the 'Highliner Gel Eye Crayon', however if you're preference swings to crayon formulas, this is definitely smooth and "drag free" on the lid, which I hear is a huge bonus for pencil fans.
The 'Magic Marc-er', IS branded a liquid liner, but am I prepared to switch it out in place of my Guerlain love of the last half a decade? I'm afraid not. I'm just utterly terrible at getting a nice straight edge to my lines with a "felt tip nib", it seems, and for whatever personal reason I have with causing the nib to drag as violently as it did (saggy lids?! At 32?!) - It's not for me.
