Last night I had the incredible pleasure of joining Holly of ‘The Kitty Luxe’, at the launch event of Glossier’s very own London pop-up shop.
“At Glossier, we’re thoughtfully creating a highly-edited collection of pared-down essential beauty products that reflect how you get ready every day—starting with your skin, then working our way up.”
The Glossier hype in the UK toward the end of this year has been untameable. Influencers, bloggers, vloggers, all desperate to share their 10% discount code with us, as the brand rolled out availability to us here across the pond.
Until that point, I had never heard of Glossier, so as I usually am with these whirlwinds, I was reluctant to climb aboard the hype train with the masses at first, until I could really find out if it was truly for me.
Sure, I’ve tried beauty products before which are brand new, and on day one everyone is a guru of (Fenty), but they’re stocked in Harvey Nics, you know? It’s just easier to get a more solid idea of what’s going on when it’s right there with you.
“We’re laying the foundation for a beauty movement that celebrates real girls, in real life. Glossier is a new way of thinking about (and shopping for) beauty products. Because “beauty” should be fun, easy, imperfect, and personal. Above all, we believe that you give life to products-products don’t breathe life into you.”
What does help though, Is when one of your oldest friends is a fan (thanks Amy), and purchasing on day one, UK time. I trusted her judgement enough to keep my eyes peeled, basically.
So sound the alarm! Glossier have today opened a temporary spot at the luxurious ’32 Portland Place’, London, for fans to pick up their favourites in person.
To celebrate, the brand held a shop launch event yesterday evening for invitees to browse around and explore before things went on sale to the public the morning after.
Now there are just a small number of issues that I was a little concerned about regarding the event. I’m not directly local to London (although I’m close enough to make my way in easily within 90mins), so was excited at the prospect of being able to potentially purchase some of the products if, by chance, I too fell in love.
At quite a lot of events like this, attendees do get chances to be patrons too, and in a way it’s a highly profitable venture for a brand to allow this, as gatherings like these are usually overflowing.
“Overflowing” being quite the key word here. On arrival queues were stretching a red rope lined street, and however beautiful the event staff and PR ladies were, you couldn’t entirely hide the undertone of panic as people were assuming entry when they were not on the guest list, or the guest list was perhaps a little overambitious for the venue itself.
And why not?! Glossier is HUGE NEWS, and people adore it right now. Everyone wants to get a slice of the glossy pie, and they were never backing down.
The event opened at 7pm, and by my arrival at 7:30pm, people were literally unintentionally hugging each other inside.
Corridors were heaving with glamorous bodies all getting a little disgruntled with one another, apologising profusely for being in the way (which couldn’t be helped), as waiting staff with cocktails and canapés tried desperately to wind through everyone to offer up their treats (I managed to get a beetroot and celeriac disc creation. It was delicious!).
During a slight lull in traffic, however, I did manage to get up close to some of the Glossier goodies that friend have recommended to me.
MILKY JELLY CLEANSER [more info]: Firstly I love the name. It’s cute! Recommended by my friend Amy, this cleanser claims to dissolve makeup and other impactful elements on the skin after a long day. Not suitable for waterproofs, this one, but highly recommended for purifying if you’re like me and remove most makeup with an oil based product first, and then do a second cleanse with the good stuff. This also claims to contain the same gentle cleaning agents that are housed in contact lens solution! So it’s very safe for the eye area.
“Hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, safe for the eye area, ophthalmologist tested, appropriate for all skin types, soap free, paraben free, sulfate free, cruelty free, non-comedogenic, vegan”.
WOWDER [more info]: I can’t cope without a good face powder. I can’t. I feel like it seals the entire deal on my makeup routine, so this one really did interest me. “Wowder” claims to combat shine, blur pores, but without settling into any lines, creases, or blips in skin texture. From what I could see at the event, and from the website too, there are only 3 skin tones to choose from, but for this kind of product, that’s more than enough really. I would go for Light/Medium for me. The other two are Dark/Deep, and Rich. Formula wise, I’m interested! It’s smooth, and makes me think it’ll behave like a primer with the finished, smoothing effect. I’ve also just hit pan on my “Chanel Beiges Sheer Glow Powder”, so this might be one to try next.
“Hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, talc free, paraben free, fragrance free, vegan, cruelty free.”
PERFECTING SKIN TINT [more info]: I’m always trying hard to cut free of heavy foundations. My skin begins to complain very quickly if I overdo it with too much product, so anyone offering a good coverage, but with a light formula with kind properties is always a welcome suggestion.
So this product claims to help skin attract and retain moisture, as well as the other good stuff like blur imperfections and brighten at the same time. The formula itself does feel promising for this, and contrary to my original imagining that the consistency would be a little watery, it was holding its own really quite well. It’s hard to tell on the back of the hand though, of course.
The skin tint comes in 5 choices for skin tone: Light, Medium, Dark, Deep, and Rich. For me, I would say that Medium would be the best choice. I’d be interested to try this out with the ‘WOWDER’ for sure.
THE SUPER PACK [more info]: A lovely back wall display was home to the famous Glossier treatment serums, all neatly lined up to enjoy. Containing ingredients such as the ever helpful Hyaluronic Acid for encouraging plumpness through good water retention in skin cells, as well as healthy vitamins for nurturing, tailored, help toward your specific skin goals. These little guys are here to boost cleansed skin prior to your regular make up routine.
We all know that taking your skin seriously first, before you reach for your make up collection is key to good everything, so these are of huge interest to me with my, at times, problematic complexion.
There are three serums to discover: Super Bounce, Super Pure, and Super Glow.
32 Portland Place could not suit Glossier, as a brand, more perfectly. The luxuriousness of it all with the delicate pink décor suited them down to the ground.
It was a shame that the launch evening was so chaotic in nature with the invite list being the capacity it was, as it really would have been fantastic to be able to network a little more, and get really involved with the products at a more leisurely pace.
Again, it would have been super to be able to buy some of the products on the evening too, but hey, the shop is open for business now so there’s always a chance from today until the 22nd for people to head back.
From the products I did manage to experience though, I was impressed! I have honestly made a solid mental note to try out the Perfecting Skin Tint, and the WOWDER at my first opportunity of needing some complexion bases, and the “Birthday Balm Dotcom” universal skin salve I had as part of a goody bag selection on leaving applied really very well to my cold, complaining lips this morning. The flavour and smell is utterly divine actually…I sense a repurchase!
“The shop will be open from the 15th – 22nd November and customers will be able to try and buy anything they desire from the entire range of cult skincare, makeup and body essentials, including their newly-launched debut perfume, Glossier You."
"Address: 32 Portland Place, W1. Weekday opening hours are 11am-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm, and Sunday 12 noon until 6pm.”
