During a recent sleepover at the divine Sunborn London, Lloyd and I thought it very rude not to enjoy and report back on their traditional afternoon tea experience after check in. You know how crazy we are for those tasty cakes and savories!
So there's not only one, standard experience on offer here at Sunborn, but you actually have the choice of several afternoon tea options:
Traditional Afternoon Tea under the Sea £30.00 per person
Traditional Afternoon Tea under the Sea with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Brut £40.00
Afternoon Tea under the Sea £35.00 per person
Afternoon Tea under the Sea with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Brut £45.00
Vegetarian Afternoon Tea £27.00 per person
Vegetarian Afternoon Tea with a glass of Laurent-Perrier Brut £37.00
Served between: 12.30pm to 16.00pm
For us, we opted for the "Afternoon Tea Under The Sea" as standard, but we did also have an option of adding a little something extra to a glass if we wished, later on (we opted to try every flavour of tea on offer though!).
Afternoon tea is served in Sunborn London's very own 'Lands End Restaurant' on the 4th floor of the luxury moored yacht hotel. The decor reflects a luxurious feel of a cruise liner, with polished wood, a sweeping central staircase to enter on, with chandelier decadence galore.
Tables are perfectly positioned facing the rear, large window of the yacht so that guests have a gorgeous view of London's Canary Warf and beyond (on a clear day).
Place settings were set immaculately, with napkin rings of gold by exceptionally smart waiting staff who were so very welcoming. I must get you the name of our personal waitress for the afternoon. She was utterly fantastic, knew every recommendation to excite us, and humored my flappy hands as I got myself in a mild moment of hyperactivity over the deliciousness on offer.
A selection of sea themed assorted cupcakes, pastry horn with vanilla Chantilly cream,
chocolate brownie and mini millionaire tarts
Devonshire clotted cream, mini rich butter fruit scones, fruit preserves.
Traditional finger sandwiches:
Smoked salmon with Philadelphia cheese on wholemeal bread
Roasted chicken, tarragon and apple on white bread
Cucumber with Greek yoghurt and cumin on white bread (v)
Grated hen eggs, mayonnaise and garden cress on brioche bap (v)
Traditional ingredients, yes, but so perfectly flavoured and presented to make them stand out from many we've tried similar.
My favourite was the egg on brioche. I actually had a second helping of that one. I have to say that the salmon was also delicious, and extremely soft and "buttery". It literally was no "effort to eat", if you get me.
The cakes and pastries were also incredible. I mention in my saved instagram story highlight that the cream horn is by far the best I've ever eaten. The pastry was magical!!! I also loved the little sea themed cupcake too. Really beautiful vanilla sponge, and sweet icing.
Another element which neither of us could fault was the gorgeous selection of teas on offer. Each choice was presented in a single bag on the table for you to smell and explore. You did, of course, have the option of traditional English Breakfast, Earl Grey, or decaf, but we were encouraged to try as many of the flavoured teas as possible (and rightly so!).
SELECTION OF ORGANIC TEAS
Decaf English Breakfast
White Ginger Pear
You can literally work your way down this entire list and back again, if you wished. All part of the experience.
Both the African Solstice and White Ginger Pear came highly recommended, and I can wholly understand why. They were both by far my favourites of the bunch.
The brand? Tea Forte! This is the first time we've ever tried teas from this company, but it honestly shall not be the last. I'll be stocking up on these tasties this year for sure.
You know how some herbal and fruit teas sound delicious and flavourful, but actually end up being quite bland? Not a chance with these! I only had to leave the bags brewing for around 1-2 minutes before their scent flooded my nose, and the flavours zinged. You can taste EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT infused within, I swear to you. I'm still a little blown away now.
The pyramid bags are marvelous too. They sit proud in your tea cup as they stew, and come complete with cute little stemmed leaves on the top. Beautiful!
From the welcome, the setting, the service, and the tasting, the Sunborn "Afternoon Tea Under The Sea" was absolutely perfect. I'm so very, very glad we were invited to sample every single morsel to our hearts content. One of the best!
